Jets to speak with Cowher

According to the Associated Press, the New York Jets plan to speak with Bill Cowher about their vacant head coaching position ... and Cowher is receptive to talking. As we know, Cowher has a daughter who attends Princeton University, which is not terribly far from the Jets' new practice facility. Click here to read the AP report.

Today's "Scout's Eye" in Pro Football Weekly asserts that there's a good chance that Bill Cowher would take the now vacant head coaching job in Cleveland, assuming the Browns are willing to make him the highest-paid coach in the NFL.

Browns: What are the Chances...?

This week's game is easy to pick. We're giving the Steelers a 95 percent chance of winning this game, the most confident we've ever been in terms of predicting a victory. It seems inconceivable that the Browns could beat the Steelers at Heinz Field with their fourth-string quarterback, Bruce Gradkowski, starting the game. Enough said.

Titans: What are the Chances...?

We're through with underestimating this team and pick the Steelers to nip the Titans this weekend, a game which the operators of The Steelyard plan to attend. Let's give the Steelers a 55 percent chance of winning, thanks in part to the fact that Tennessee will be without two of its key defensive linemen. Not to mention that the Titans don't appear to have the kind of offense that can expose the Steelers' D. On the other hand, we're mindful of the the fact that the Steelers have only beaten the Titans in Nashville on one occasion. Let's hope that trend doesn't hold on Sunday.

Odds of Cowher becoming Cleveland's next head coach? "50/50"

According to the "The Way We Hear It" column in today's edition of Pro Football Weekly, the odds of Bill Cowher becoming Cleveland's next head coach are "50/50" and "money will be no object," according to one team insider. The column notes that the team's second choice is Marty Schottenheimer, who led Cleveland to two AFC Championship Game appearances back in the 1980s.

Steelers 13, Ravens 9

Steelers sweep Ravens. Steelers win AFC North. Steelers wrap up #2 seed in AFC playoffs. Steelers control their own destiny in terms of the #1 seed in the AFC.

But the Steelers did get a lucky break when the referee ruled that Santonio Holmes scored a touchdown on 3rd and goal late in the fourth quarter. In my opinion, it was too close to overturn the original call, which would have left the Steelers with fourth and inches and coach Mike Tomlin with a major decision: Go for the win or kick a chip-shot field goal to tie and send the game into overtime.

With the prediction "loss," The Steelyard falls to 9-5 this year and 35-12 all-time.

Ravens: What are the Chances...?

Once upon a time the Steelers experienced considerable success in Baltimore, but that hasn't been the case in recent years, as Pittsburgh hasn't won there in the Ben Roethlisberger era. This game figures to be a low-scoring nail biter, but we're picking the Ravens, with Baltimore's home field advantage being the difference. We give Pittsburgh a 45 percent chance of winning.

The Steelyard is 9-4 on the season and 35-11 all-time.

Cowboys: What are the Chances...?

The Steelers are a three-point favorite over the Cowboys today. The key to the game for the Steelers ought to be the offensive line's ability to protect Big Ben from Demarcus Ware and Co. On defense, the big test will be keeping Cowboys' QB Tony Romo from making big plays in the passing game. Pressuring Romo will be important, but James Harrison & Co. will need to get Romo on the ground, as no one throws the ball better on the run than Romo, except perhaps a healthy Ben Roethlisberger. The cold, miserable weather favors the Steelers, and should help Pittsburgh escape with a narrow victory. All told, we estimate that the Steelers have a 55 percent chance of winning this matchup.
