Health Miller signs contract extension
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, starting tight end Health Miller has signed a contract extension that will keep him in Pittsburgh for the next six years. The agreement calls for a $12.5 million signing bonus and has a total value of $35.3 million.
Personally, I like the idea of extending Miller's contract, but in contrast to other recent contracts (Starks, Kemoeatu, Ward) it seems like the team might have overpaid a little in this case.
At any rate, kicker Jeff Reed might be next in line for a contract extension (with safety Ryan Clark also a possibility). Reed plays a position that isn't particularly expensive, and he's proven that he can kick effectively at Heinz Field, which is no small consideration.

The Steelers need to sign Safety Ryan Clark I think he's going to be a great safety someday. Did you see that hit he put on the Ravens runningback. We also need Casey Hampton to get signed.
Overpaid? NO WAY! His the unsung hero on the Steelers by far. I would like to see the ball in Miller hands more!
3rd and 4th downs, he comes through almost every time! Even in the last Super Bowl.
As a fan:
Thank-you, Thank-you,Thank-you!!!!!!
The Steelers may choose to sign Jeff Reed, but this signing obviously signals the priority for Heath, an intelligent decision. Clark will not be around after this season, although he's a great Steeler. (Hampton and Keisel will also be gone). Enough money needs to be around for Lamar Woodley and possibly LT in future years, depending on the latter's progression. Oh yeah....FWP will also be gone.
For the type of work that Miller has shown he is capable and willing to do, week in and week out, I think that his contract was justified. He is a great all around player with an even better attitude about his role. I am happy to know that he will he here for the next 6 years and hope that he finishes his career with the Steelers!
Not much substance to this. All you say is he's overpaid. State your case. What are other TE's with similar abilities getting paid? I'd call him a tier 2 TE..not elite, but very valuable to the team nonetheless.
Personally I'm relieved they signed him. He's got such great hands and has great chemistry with Ben, I actually think maybe he got underpaid. I bet some desperate team would have paid him more...I'd single out Washington, but they are good with Cooley.
No way is Miller overpaid. He is a priority Steeler and now he is with the team for a LOOOng time. He is as effective as anyone at the position and does anything asked of him and does it extremely well. Reed will be back, but Hampton,Kiesel,Clark, and Parker will not be after this season.
